The digester footprint is not the whole site

A manufacturer may provide dimensions for the principal AD unit, but the complete project can also need room for reception tanks, pumps, mixers, CHP, control equipment, digestate infrastructure, a separator, pipework and both maintenance and vehicle access — this distinction is easy to underestimate at the planning stage.

Why access adds space

Equipment needs to be delivered, lifted into position, inspected, maintained and eventually replaced — packing everything into the smallest possible footprint can create real problems later, even if it looks efficient on a drawing.

Existing farm infrastructure can help

A farm may already have slurry tanks, hardstanding, roads, suitable buildings and electrical services, all of which can potentially influence and reduce the layout's new space requirements.

How should a site be chosen?

The best site is rarely determined by one factor alone — it usually balances slurry source, digestate destination, electrical connection, vehicle access, ground conditions, drainage, neighbouring receptors, future farm development and maintenance access together.

Can the plant go right next to the cow shed?

Potentially, but proximity to slurry is only one consideration — environmental, planning, safety, access and operational requirements also need assessing. For certain permitted facilities in England, Environment Agency standard rules impose minimum distances from specified sensitive receptors, watercourses and protected sites; those rules depend on the particular permitting route and shouldn't be treated as universal dimensions for every farm AD plant.
